I am in the process of visiting zoos across the UK and documenting the behaviour of the animals in captivity. I have been saddened to see an animal such as an elephant alone when they are such social beings. Their distress and boredom is obvious. In some instances they were without shade apart from their enclosures. I spent many hours watching cheetahs pacing up and down in their enclosures. There is obviously essential and valuable conservation work taking place but for the most part we no longer need to see these sensitive creatures in safari parks and zoos for the purposes of public entertainment when being deprived of their instinctive behaviour and natural habits causes significant stress.
